Puerto Rico NEDC Committee

The Northeast Diesel Collaborative (NEDC) Puerto Rico committee, which is composed of various Puerto Rican government and private partners, has been meeting regularly since its inception in November 2008. Those stakeholders, who now function as Puerto Rico's representatives to the Northeast Diesel Collaborative, include the Alianza Guaguas Limpias (PR Clean School Bus Alliance), the Department of Transportation, the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority and various Municipalities throughout the island, among others. Through monthly meetings led by the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board (EQB), with EPA Region 2's help and guidance, the goal of the NEDC Puerto Rico Committee is to bring together government, industry, and the community to share information on mobile source operations that rely on diesel power as they relate to air quality and to identify, prioritize, and implement innovative non-regulatory, cost-effective diesel emission reduction strategies in Puerto Rico. In addition the Committee guides and facilitates to its members, funding opportunities available for clean diesel projects. The former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator, Lisa Jackson, noted the accomplishments of the NEDC Puerto Rico committee during her remarks at the League of United Latin American Citizens National Convention and Exposition in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in July of 2009.

EQB is the lead for the organization of the committee's meetings and other clean diesel events in the island, including idle reduction workshops. For more information about the committee or how to join contact Vilma Ojeda of the PR Environmental Quality Board at vilmaojeda@jca.gobierno.pr
