Northeast Clean Ports Workshop, Feb. 1, 2006, NYC

Nearly 170 people attended  the one-day Northeast Clean Ports Workshop, which was organized by the  Northeast Diesel Collaborative, in partnership with the North Atlantic Ports  Association (NAPA), National Association of Waterfront Employers (NAWE),  Manufacturers of Emission Controls Association (MECA), U.S. EPA and its Clean Ports USA program, and Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management  (NESCAUM). The workshop brought together key members of the public and private sectors with a stake in port operations to examine cost-effective, business-savvy strategies for reducing diesel emissions at ports.

Alan Steinberg, Regional Administrator for EPA Region 2, and Tom Valleau, Executive Director of the North Atlantic Ports Association opened the conference.  In the sessions that followed, experts from ports, industry, and public agencies shared their experience in developing both comprehensive emission reduction programs and specific projects in the areas of cleaner fuels, retrofits, idle reduction, fleet modernization, and operational changes to improve efficiency.  Case studies focused on the ports of New York and New Jersey, Long Beach, and Houston; other presenters discussed strategies for outreach to stakeholders and for securing funding.  Lively discussions among those attending the workshop are leading to both new emission reduction projects and the formation of a Northeast Diesel Collaborative workgroup focused on ports.
